There was a time when anyone would tremble upon hearing the name John D. Rockefeller. Not only was he the world’s first billionaire, he’s one of the richest people in history. His empire - Standard Oil - became the most dominant monopoly in the world by brutally crushing competitors, taking control of multiple industries, bribing the government into submission, and treating business as if it was war. Because of his ruthless business practices and secretive deals, Rockefeller made many enemies. His career is filled with bitter rivalries like with Andrew Carnegie, and even ferocious battles against US Presidents. But, before he was the titan of the oil industry, Rockefeller was at the very bottom of society. His story is one of only a handful of cases where someone manages to rise from the depths of poverty, to the absolute peak of wealth and power. Rockefeller’s story is at times inspiring, and at times… chilling. It’s an example of what happens when greed and ambition go completely unchecked. This Rockefeller documentary shows the insane true story of John D Rockefeller, the history of Standard Oil and one of the craziest rags to riches stories. At times it’s an inspiring business story with lessons for entrepreneurs, at other times it’s a dark business story showing the worst of corporate greed. And after crushing his competition, through a series of strategic investments Rockefeller became the richest person in the world (even surpassing Andrew Carnegie). Adjusting for inflation, he is one of the richest self made men in history. And when his business empire got split up and he got given shares in other companies, he became even richer as their stock price soared on the stock market. But before all that wealth, let me take you back to 1839, where a young John D. Rockefeller is born into poverty… For more business stories about business magnates and titans of industry, subscribe to MagnatesMedia. John D. Rockefeller was the world’s first bona fide billionaire, meaning that his billion-dollar status wasn’t retroactively calculated with inflation. Instead, he was the first person to own a billion’s worth of assets in real time and that’s even after the Great Depression wiped $10 billion from his bank accounts. But even that barely caused a dent to his pocketbook. Now, his fortune is spread across six generations and 70 heirs so it’s understandable why he has such a divisive reputation. For some, he was a revolutionary tycoon and trendsetting philanthropist. For others, he’s a puppet master who used his wealth and power to skew the law in his favour. In any case, you don’t make $360 billion without making a few enemies (or friends in high places). Thankfully the rules which helped him change the landscape of business and commerce can be followed by anyone, so let’s examine them to separate the man from the myth. "The message was, a dollar is a dollar and to value that and to put a lot of value on hard work and the enjoyment of life, of course, and to give back," Rockefeller told CNBC's Robert Frank on "Power Lunch" Thursday. In fact, her grandfather, David Rockefeller, the legendary American banker who died in 2017, gave back about $2 billion over his lifetime to various philanthropic endeavors. This week David and Peggy Rockefeller's personal collection is on sale during a weeklong auction at Christie's in New York. "There's a time for private life, and there's a time to step forward," Ariana Rockefeller said. "This was really my grandparents' vision." The auction house estimated the collection to be worth about $500 million. As of Thursday, the collection had made more than $765 million, including the sale of a Picasso painting for $115 million. Proceeds from the auction will go to charity. The collection includes the family's personal artifacts, such as a treasured picnic basket, candlesticks, paintings and fine china, among other things. Rockefeller said she is excited that the public loves the collection as much as her grandfather did. "He really used almost every piece in his collection and loved it," she said. "I think my grandfather had such great taste, and he really cherished beautiful things." All family members got to keep one item from the collection, worth up to $1 million, she said. Rockefeller, who launched her own fashion and apparel label in 2011, chose a bracelet her grandfather once bought for her grandmother. She wore the bracelet to Monday's Met Gala event. The Rockefellers are seven generations rich. Ariana Rockefeller said the secret to her family's success — and by extension her own — is having a close-knit family that works hard and budgets wisely. "There's such a value of having a work ethic in my family and of working hard at whatever it is we choose to do and focus on," Ariana Rockefeller said. "I definitely try to honor that," she said.

The history of Rockefeller family - documentary
Cleveland, Ohio on the brink of the 19th century... we meet a young John D. Rockefeller — a man not BORN great — but upon whom greatness would be bestowed by the trials of life. Embark with us on this journey from the freshly minted wealth of the “new money” Rockefellers to the prestigious “old money” dynasty John would build, as we describe… How The Rockefeller Family Went From "New Money" To “Old Money”. How The Kennedys Went From “New Money” To “Old Money”: 🤍 How The World’s Richest Man Picks An Heir (The Arnault Family Succession): 🤍 TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Introduction 1:37 1. A Baptism of Oil 4:55 2. The Rise of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. 9:03 3. The Next Generation of Rockefellers 14:08 4. The Rockefeller Family’s Transition From “New Money” To “Old Money” The financial landscape of America’s Gilded Age was indeed a volatile crucible, with fortunes being made and lost almost overnight. Within this climate, a distinction arose between “new money” — the freshly minted wealth of entrepreneurs and industrialists — and “old money,” the inherited wealth of established families that had accumulated assets over generations. The terms encapsulated more than just the age of wealth; they signified cultural differences, social acceptability, and the capacity for wealth preservation. The Rockefellers — beginning as “new money” — were no strangers to this volatility. However, their pragmatic approach to wealth accumulation and preservation arguably allowed them to transition into the esteemed category of “old money.” Key to this transformation was their ability to integrate into high society and form strategic alliances through marriage. Addtionally, embedded in the core of the Rockefeller family’s legacy is their remarkable philanthropy. The Rockefellers became known as patrons of education and the arts, helping to shape America’s cultural landscape. They lent their considerable resources to institutions such as the University of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art. This deep-rooted philanthropy wasn’t simply about donating money; it was an essential tool for shaping their public persona, showcasing their commitment to societal advancement. Yet, alongside this is their equally noteworthy ability to amass and preserve substantial wealth. This duality reflects the character of John D. Rockefeller himself, who was known to be a ruthless businessman yet an incredibly generous philanthropist. Their philanthropic ventures were strategic. They served to not only improve public welfare but also to bolster their societal standing, assisting in their seamless transition from “new money” to “old money.” Through these actions, the Rockefellers were not just cementing their place within societal elites, but also highlighting their dedication to the public good. Therefore, simultaneously, the Rockefellers adopted several strategies to safeguard their wealth, ensuring that it would endure across generations. One significant step in this regard was the establishment of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1913. This move was more than an act of charity; it was a calculated effort to shield their wealth from heavy estate taxes, thereby allowing it to grow and benefit society simultaneously. Over time, the Foundation’s immense contributions to public health, education, and arts helped to further establish and fortify the Rockefeller name. Trusts also played a critical role in their wealth preservation strategy. John D. Rockefeller Sr. formed his first trust in 1891, transferring a significant portion of his fortune to it. This move offered both tax advantages and protection against potential heirs’ mismanagement, thereby ensuring the continuity of the Rockefeller fortune. In addition, the Rockefellers innovatively used holding companies to manage their diverse business interests. These corporate structures provided a protective shield for their wealth while also promoting growth. This use of corporate entities set a precedent for future wealthy families, showing how wealth could be protected and multiplied simultaneously. As such, the Rockefellers are a perfect example of how one family managed to become synonymous with philanthropy while maintaining an iron grip on their wealth, demonstrating a duality that has become part of their enduring legacy.
The Rockefeller family’s industrial and political accomplishments have helped shape America as we know it, and that’s great... but real life isn’t sunshine and rainbows. Here are some surprisingly dark Rockefeller family facts and Rockefeller family history that you probably didn't know: 5) A good place to start is William A. Rockefeller, the father of John D. and William Jr.: his sons who would go on to become titans of industry and amass tremendous wealth. William A, however, was a con artist who used to pretend to be deaf and mute while he was working as a traveling salesman… selling completely useless miracle pills. If pretending to be deaf and mute and selling fake medicine to people isn’t enough for you, he also had a mistress, fathered several illegitimate children, and even pretended to be a doctor named William Livingston. Seems like he could have come up with a better fake name. OR William A. Rockefeller, where the A stands for asshole. 4) Nobody wants to be eaten by cannibals, I think, but that might be what happened to Michael Rockefeller - son of former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller. Michael was on an anthropological expedition off the coast of New Guinea when his catamaran tipped over. Whoopsie daisy. Anyway, in hopes of making it to shore to get help for his passengers, Rockefeller swam off into the sea and was never seen again. The obvious conclusion is that he drowned, but there were multiple nearby tribes that practiced cannibalism, and in 1969 a Dutch journalist ventured into a remote village to investigate Rockefeller's disappearance and was told that Rockefeller had been killed and eaten. You can’t say for sure that he wasn’t, and neither can I. 3) One of the first major tragedies to hit the Rockefeller family came in 1951 when Winifred Emeny - the great niece of John D. Rockefeller - killed her two children before taking her own life. Emeny, who was a hip socialite in the swanky Greenwich, Connecticut scene, started two cars in her garage, put her two young daughters in one of the cars, and laid down between the cars until all three were found dead by the family maid. 2) In September of 1913, nearly 11,000 coal miners in Colorado went on strike against the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corporation… which was owned by the Rockefeller family and Standard Oil. In response to the strike, the workers and their families were evicted from the company-owned housing. However the workers maintained their resolve and set up tent communities nearby to continue the strike. That’s when guards under the employ of John D Rockefeller Sr went in, killed the strike leader, and then began shooting at families fleeing the scene. All told, 19 were killed, including several women and children. John D. Rockefeller, Sr., testified that, even after knowing that guards in his pay had murdered the strikers and their families, he "would have taken no action" to prevent the tragedy. That’s ice cold. OR John D Rockefeller - where the D stands for dick. 1) Finally, In 1918, the Rockefeller Foundation helped to create the Eugenic Society of São Paulo, directly financing programs aimed at breeding out the poor and disabled, and making everyone else in Brazil a little more, you know, white. The idea of Social Darwinism was widespread among Brazil's leading scientists, educators, social thinkers, as well as many elected officials and the Rockefeller Foundation played a huge role in implementing what was called the “public health movement” in Brazil, which, again, was selective breeding to make everyone white. Literally to, and I quote "to sanitize is to eugenize"

Rockefeller was an American business magnate and philanthropist who played a significant role in the rise of the oil industry and amassed immense wealth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. John Davison Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839, in Richford, New York. He grew up in a modest family and displayed strong entrepreneurial skills from a young age. In the 1860s, Rockefeller recognized the potential of the emerging oil industry. He co-founded the Standard Oil Company in 1870, which would become one of the most dominant and controversial corporations in American history. Through aggressive business practices and strategic acquisitions, Rockefeller's Standard Oil gained control over oil refining and distribution. After retiring from the oil industry, Rockefeller turned his attention to philanthropy. He dedicated a significant portion of his wealth to various causes, including education, medicine, and scientific research. His notable philanthropic endeavors include the establishment of the Rockefeller Foundation, the Rockefeller University, and the General Education Board. John D. Rockefeller's wealth and business practices made him one of the richest individuals in history. Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters swarmed the streets surrounding Rockefeller Center Wednesday in an effort to derail the annual tree lighting in support of Gaza. Waving Palestinian flags and signs calling for the “end to genocide,” the ralliers gathered along Sixth Avenue alongside hordes of tourists waiting in line to see the iconic ceremony. The protesters gathered outside the News Corp building, which houses The Post and Fox News, and has already been targeted by pro-Palestinian protesters on at least two occasions. One rallier was seen climbing on top of the pillar bearing the building’s address, and another was seen carrying a massive sign bearing a swastika, comparing the Israel Defense Forces to German Nazis. “Free free Palestine!” the protesters chanted. The ultimate rags to riches tail of one of history's wealthiest businessmen, oil magnate, John D. Rockefeller. When adjusting for inflation, some estimate his net worth would have today been around 400 billion dollars, making him the richest person in the world. But how did he build his business empire & make so much money? This video is Rockefeller's story... John D. Rockefeller, the oil magnate that’s widely considered the richest American of all time, with an approximate net worth of around 400 billion dollars in today’s money, even after giving a substantial amount of his fortune away. And yet, he started from very humble beginnings. When he turned 16 Rockefeller dropped out of school and got his first real job as a book-keeper, earning just 50 cents a day. However, after working there for around 2 years, his employers still refused to give him a meaningful raise, and so he decided to start his own produce business, as he had a goal to make $100,000, and knew he’d need to build something of his own to reach that target. Luckily, that first job had already taught him a lot, and gave him the experience, connections and reputation, to raise $4,000 for starting his own venture; a business selling goods like meat, hay and grain. Which did well, in the first year of trading it made almost half a million dollars - of course Rockefeller didn’t keep all of that, a lot of it went back into business expenses and loans, but it meant when a big opportunity arose, he now had some real money to invest. And that opportunity, was oil. In 1859, the first American oil well was discovered, which began the Pennsylvania oil rush. However, Rockefeller realised that whilst most people were trying to get rich from drilling oil, the bigger profits were actually in oil refinery. So, at just 24 years old, he used the money from his first business to build an oil refinery. Now, around this time he met a man named Henry Flagler who was interested in investing in his business, and so together they incorporated the Standard Oil Company, and began the process of buying out all the smaller nearby oil refineries that were in competition with them. Whenever any of these refineries refused to sell their oil to him, he simply started selling his oil at a loss so that their customers flocked to him instead, which would put these smaller companies out of business. These kind of practices allowed the Standard Oil company to keep expanding across the entire country - they kept buying out rivals, undercutting competitors, and cutting costs wherever possible. By the 1870’s, Rockefeller's oil company owned 90% of the world's oil refining industry. He owned 20,000 oil wells, had over 100,000 employees, and at the vert peak, some estimate its total value would today have been worth almost a trillion dollars. But Rockefeller wasn't done yet. Inside The Trillionaire Lifestyle Of John D. Rockefeller John D. Rockefeller, better known as the richest man in modern history, made his millions through the oil industry. But we all know that, what we want to tell you is how he spent his many millions. Especially in a time when you couldn’t throw it all on crypto! Stick around till the end of this video and we’ll tell you. How Much is Rockefeller ACTUALLY Worth? Rockefeller made his many millions by being one of the first people to enter the oil refining business in the United States. He then went on to found the Standard Oil Company, when it then went on to become the largest oil refinery company in America. In fact, it was so big, that the Supreme Court had ordered it to be dissolved and broken up into other smaller companies, Like Exxon Mobil. During the time he was alive, Rockefeller amassed up to $1.4 Billion, much of this wealth came from the oil company itself and the incredible amounts of investments that he had made in property and gold. In today’s world, having just over a billion dollars isn’t that impressive when you have Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates as comparisons. But we have to account for inflation as well. You know, that nasty thing that’s caused the price of gas to go way up in the past five years. In inflation-adjusted terms, Rockefeller’s quaint $1.4 billion amounts up to just north of $400 billion. Now, that is impressive. #billionairelifestyle #lifestyle We show billionaire lifestyle to give you motivation for 2020.
