Myanmar's struggle for democracy has received little international attention. But it is dramatic: in 2021, more than 6,000 people were reported dead after protests against the military coup erupted. Airstrikes hit towns and villages and artillery shelled pockets of resistance. The world seems to have forgotten the civil war raging in Myanmar. Thousands of young people are risking death and sacrificing their youth to fight a military coup that has deposed an elected government and stolen their future. While the world was preoccupied with Covid and the horrors of the Russian war in Ukraine, this struggle began to play out in a country that had briefly opened the door to partial democracy under Aung San Suu Kyi before a military junta slammed it shut again. In February 2021, young people took to the streets to protest the military coup staged earlier that month by Min Aung Hlaing, commander-in-chief of Myanmar's armed forces. The protesters were horrified to discover that live ammunition was flying in their direction. People were being killed. Today we entered Myanmar from a placed called Zokhawthar in Mizoram. Upon reaching Zokhawthar, you can easily cross the gate between India and Myanmar and spend a day in Myanmar without a passport and visa. I have experienced many tourist places in Mizoram so far but this crossing Indo-Myanmar border and getting to spend a day in Myanmar was one of my fav things to do. Zokhawthar is a border town in the Champhai district of Mizoram state of India. There is one Zokhawthar in India and another in Myanmar. The two are divided by a gate. Upon entering Zokawthar, we took a bike and headed to Ril Dil Lake - one of the key tourist attractions of Mizoram/Myanmar. Rih Dil is a natural lake located in northwestern Chin State in Myanmar. It lies at about 3 km from Zokhawthar, the nearest village situated at an Indo-Burma border. From Monday to Saturday, Tha Sai in Samut Sakhon Province is an anonymous factory town; the home of 250,000 workers in Thailand's seafood processing industry. Burmese food is something totally unique- a flavor profile shaped by an ancient history with roots connecting the empire to powerful culinary neighbors like China, India, and Siam, but with indigenous techniques and ingredients that make this cuisine all its own. Somehow, in twelve years cooking and eating in Asia, it never occurred to me how strange it was that I didn't know anything about Burmese food. I never questioned why Thai, Vietnamese, and Malaysian food could be found anywhere, but the largest geographic country in mainland Southeast Asia- a place with a 4000-year history and an outsized influence on the continent- was invisible. But then I tried my first Burmese meal, and all of a sudden, a million questions needed answering. This video is an attempt to answer- maybe not all of those questions, but at least...say...two or three? What are some of the iconic dishes in Myanmar? How did Burmese food take shape? And why have I never encountered it before? #Myanmar #Travel #Documentary Overall, Burma has been probably one if not the most breathtaking country we ever travelled. Despite officially being one of the poorest place in the world, we found very industrious and friendly people. Yangon: the capital is not too bad to spend 2 days (no more). The Shwedagon Paya at sunset is an inspirational place while walking around in the city center will reveal magnificent and huge colonial buildings, often abandoned. One memorable experience was to take the train to Bagan. What was supposed to be a 14h journey over 600km ... turned to be a 20h journey across magnificent landscape. The very slow speed of the train and the big open windows gave the feeling to be cycling in the Burmese country side. Once in Bagan, the magnificence of this country came to the peak. The 2,000 temples immersed in a green landscape are amazing. Exploring them is an experience that is at the same time cultural (for the history), mystical (they are still places of worship) and athletical (you can climb on top of the roof on most of them). Buddhist temples are not only places to prey, but their courts are places to meet and spend time with the family. In Bagan, thanks to the help of a group of local women, me also manage to get a ride and navigate, for a little while, the Irrawady river, the main river of Myanmar. The Inle Lake was our next stop after Bagan. While it’s utterly beautiful, it’s probably the most touristic place in Myanmar and that spoils a bit the atmosphere. Anyway, watching the local fishermen fishing at sunset is something breathtaking. Inle Lake is not the only attraction here. After we were done with the lake, we move exploring the hills of the surrounding area, where agriculture is the main occupation for the population. We even discovered a wine estate producing very good white and red wines. The last part of our trip was Mrauk-U, a remote rural village at the border with Bangladesh. This was the capital of the Rakhine State and during the 1500 – 1600 AD, was one of the most important cities in Asia. We looked at a painting done in the 1600 and shows a big city with long walls, a quarter for European merchants and a number of vessels and ships trading in the port. Now, the remaining temples and walls are to be found in the wheat fields.

After the military coup in Myanmar in 2021, the Chin ethnic minority took up arms. The Chin people are fighting to defend their territory, their identity, and their democratic principles against the junta. In the mountains in the remote west of Myanmar, a bitter war is raging. The Chin, a primarily Christian minority, still control most of the area after putting up a fierce resistance against the Myanmar military. The resistance fighters train in the mountains along the Indian border. Hundreds of young people gave up their jobs or studies to join the battle. Although they’re equipped with little more than light weapons, they’re determined to stand their ground. But the civilian population is paying a high price for the war. Thousands of villagers have been bombed by the junta, their homes destroyed. Many have been forced to flee.
