Malaysia Airlines used to be a 5-star airline. Then came the financial crisis, then another one, then it became a disaster airline, with 2 horrible incidents within 4 months: Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 to Beijing disappeared and later supposedly crashed into the Indian Ocean, and then Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was downed my militias over Ukraine. It was out of the airlines control, and yet the airline has been suffering immensely from these terrible incidents How is flying Malaysia Airlines today, in 2023? We're visiting the airline's flagship lounge for business class in Kuala Lumpur, the Golden Lounge. (the Platinum Lounge is open again now too - but not available for business class but rather for their very, very few business-suite passengers and oneworld emerald customers). In this Malaysia Airlines Flight Review video we take you with us onboard a Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330 in Economy Class. Our flight is from Doha Airport (Hamad International Airport) to Kuala Lumpur Airport in Malaysia. This flight was booked as a Qatar Airways flight from Copenhagen to Kuala Lumpur. Both flights were meant to be flown by Qatar Airways but ended up being flown by Finnair on the Copenhagen to Doha Route (not impressed) and Malaysia Airlines on this route between Doha and Kuala Lumpur. Cabin: The cabin felt very spacious considering it’s an A330-300. I assume this is because it is a 2-4-2 configuration. The cabin did look quite old, about 12 years old considering that’s how old the aircraft is and it seems like they haven’t revamped it yet. New cabins will be introduced soon on their A330-900neo soon. Seat: The seat felt comfortable. And because I had no one sitting next to me, I had a better experience. I was able to lie down during the flight which made this flight a much comfier one. However, this seat may pose a problem during long haul services. In my opinion, if the seats felt a bit more cushioned and were provided with (not sure what they’re called) but they’re like head restraints were you just rest your head on, it would make it much more comfy. Legroom: The legroom was great for me considering I’m a small person. It may become a problem for anyone bigger than me however. IFE: The IFE has many great movies to choose from. But it’s not the movies for me. The screen was very old and reflective. It was hard to navigate through the IFE with a remote let alone a finger. The headphones worked just fine. Service: The service was great! They were however, a bit slow and less attentive that you might find on other airlines. Meal: The meal was awful. I’m not a seafood person especially on a flight. I’m not sure if others found the meal good, but I can’t see why they would. The noodles were mushy and the presentation of the food is gut-wrenching. Definitely the worse meal I’ve had in years! However, I know their food can be amazing. Malaysia Airlines is present on my top 3 best food on any airline which is when they served the chicken curry with rice. That was delicious! This time though, not so sure. Cleanliness: The cabin looked clean upon boarding, and the toilets were made sure that they were. However, down under the seats, you can see bits of crumbs and finger nails which was unpleasant. The cabin also didn’t have a scent. Other airlines tend to make the cabin smell nice, but Malaysia Airlines didn’t bother (which is ok). Website: Their website was hard to navigate through, and the glitches definitely didn’t make it any better. It definitely needs improvement. We manage to book a flight eventually and did its job. Value for money: I’d say the value of money was alright. I’ve had to pay 1,100rm, which is £172. Overall: I think Malaysia Airlines is definitively an airline that needs to undergo improvements. First off, they need new planes which is already in the works. I think their food is great, it’s just unfortunately on selected flights, you may not get the usual service. Perhaps they need to make sure that their beverages are delicious an all flights. #tripreport #malaysiaairlines #a330

Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-800 / B737-800 MA are currently in the process of rolling out new cabin interiors for their B737-800 aircrafts. The changes are significant! I have summarised these changes in my YouTube review video at Luxury Vegan Travel. I flew the old design (thankfully) on this flight. I travelled in May 2023 from Phuket International Airport (HKT) in Thailand to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) in Malaysia and then again from KUL to Bangkok (BKK) in Thailand. For reference, I sat in 6A on both legs of the journey. Like most Asian airlines, the crew were nice. However, as I flew economy and sat near the window I didn’t get to speak to them as much as I wanted to. The flight from HKT to KUL was about 60%-70% full and took about 95 minutes. The crew handed out a packet of peanuts on boarding and later a snack which was a sandwich and tea/coffee. The snack also came with a bottle of water and in my case a small apple juice. The sandwich was pretty bad! Thankfully as it was a short flight and I had a large breakfast, the peanuts, apple juice and water were more than enough to get me through until I reached my hotel (The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur). You can also checkout the review of this hotel on my YouTube channel at Luxury Vegan Travel. The seat was fairly comfortable but the tray table is quite low when opened. As such, I had to sit in a very careful position otherwise the tray table would rest on my legs and be at a slight angle which may cause drinks to spill. The old design also has a 9” LCD display which is very clear! There was also a decent selection of entertainment options! I visited the toilet about 35 minutes before landing and it was clean! My return flight was slightly longer – about 130-135 minutes. Again, a packet of peanuts were handed out at the beginning. During this flight, a full hot meal was served. I had selected a vegan meal for both legs. On this leg, I was served vegetable pasta. Sadly, this was not heated up very well and was luke warm. I know you can ask the crew to reheat this but as the flight was about 90% full I didn’t want to bother them. Luckily, I had saved my peanuts from earlier and so had those with a can of coke! Again I had a large breakfast and so would be okay until I reach my hotel Le Meridian in Bangkok – again – you can watch the review on the YouTube channel. One thing I should mention is that I am 99% blind and I always seek special assistance at the airport to get from the Check in counter to my seat on the plane. However, disappointingly there was no option to request this online and so you have to get in touch with MA. Also, as I can see very little I normally request a window seat and no other airline has ever requested payment from me to choose a seat to help meet my needs based on my disability. MA was the first airline asking me to pay for this request. That was shocking. I do want to try their Business Class and First Class at some point but am reluctant to do so based on the upcoming changes and after-sales experience described in the above paragraph. There are so many more alternatives and amazing airlines and service out there. I last flew Malaysia Airlines in 2013 and that was a terrible experience. Despite having booked the special assistance in advance, no one turned up which meant by the time someone did – I missed my connecting flight and had to wait at KL for some several hours in an empty waiting room with only 1 voucher that entitled me to 1 sandwich, 1 packet of crisps and 1 drink. Anyway, this was better but was also 10 years later. Overall, I would rate them on the lower end based on my experience regarding the booking of the special assistance, paying to choose my seat despite being disabled, the poor quality of food and now the ‘green washing’ whereby they are using sustainability in rolling out cost-cutting changes.

UPDATE! As far as I’m aware, this was NOT an ATC related situation: it appears the MAS pilot(s) maybe didn’t expect the BA jet to hold for so long? just bad timing for the roll-on 🤷🏼♂️ Of course, we often see two aircraft on the same runway when the lead aircraft is departing from an intersection point, but to line-up this close (behind) is unusual. You can even see the smoke blast from the engines as I zoom 😯 Even small engines like the CFM56, V2500 (in this case with the BA Jet) or even the CF34 can inflict some serious damage from takeoff thrust. Engines and sensors are at most risk for the trailing aircraft. It’s almost as bad as sand-blasting with tiny particles of rubber and grit. In my view they’re lucky one of the Speed or altitude sensors didn’t get blocked! One (member) A220pilot said he’d be concerned about damage to his sensors from the Jet blast if he was that close 🚀 This is something never witnessed before. We’ve seen a few close ones ‘rolling-in’ as the lead aircraft is starting its takeoff run. All the other departures are more ‘timed’ by the pilots, with ATC synchronising the whole thing like a well-timed movement. Get involved in the comments 👍🏻
