Despite my best efforts to make my next machine shop project “simple”, I just couldn’t help myself but include ALL the features. As a result this one required a bit more engineering design than usual. So I decided to make a dedicated drafting video (i.e. without computer aided design software). I’ll walk through my personal design process starting with the pencil sketch. Then roughing out the assembly drawing. And finally putting together the technical drawing (blueprint) for each part. Along the way I’ll talk about the drafting tools (drafting machine, mechanical pencil, etc), techniques (pencil rolling, line types, etc) and view styles (section view, detail view, etc) I use. Enjoy! #inheritancemachining #machineshop #hobbymachinist Patreon (Early Access + Ad Free + Drawings) - 🤍 Drawings Store - 🤍 Merch: 🤍 Instagram - 🤍 Website - 🤍 Thank you again to the Micrometer level Patreon members listed at the end of the video! As technology and computers have improved over the years, a new high-precision computer controlled manufacturing technique called CNC machining has spawned. CNC machines, or computer numerically controlled machines, are electro-mechanical devices that can manipulate tools around a varying number of axis, usually 3 or 5, with high-precision per instruction from a computer program. CNC machining is one of two ways that engineers, machinists, or makers can generate a physical part from a computer design file, with the other being 3D printing, known as additive manufacturing. These pins are worn out so we are making new replacement pins! We’ve got 2 big bucket pins from a Hitachi ZX670 Excavator and 2 pins from the ripper bed frame off a D9T Bulldozer. We show the step by step process of making the new pins. We start with machining the plates off the old pins before machining up the new pins using induction hardened chrome rod. The D9 dozer pins also need deep hold drilling and tapping for the grease holes before using the milling machine to drill a through hole for the grease channel. We finish up the job by welding the plates onto the new pins. Welcome back to the machine shop! This video I’ll be tackling a project I’ve wanted to revisit for 8 years; a bolt action copper pen. I manually machined a custom pen years ago as a Christmas gift for my father-in-law and have been itching to make one for myself. While I was able to find the old prints I threw together back then, I’ll start at the drafting board and put together proper engineering drawings. The will be made from both 110 copper and 410 stainless steel, with a few button head screws, and a nice ballpoint pen ink cartridge thrown in the mix. Most of the work will be done on the manual lathe, though I do get to visit the vertical milling machine and try out the rotary table chuck adapter I spent 3 long videos building. The final part of the pen will be a stainless steel clip that I’ll use a ball peen hammer to work harden before forming into its final shape. Enjoy! This excavator H Link or push link is worn out, it can’t be weld repaired so we’re going to make a new one! The H Link is for a Kobelco SK225SR 23 tonne excavator. In this part 1 video we show the step by step process of machining and milling the hollow bar for the H-Link bosses and prepping all of the plates for welding. We start by turning and boring the hollow bar on the lathe to suit the bushes before drilling and tapping holes for the grease in the milling machine. A video overview of the essential skills involved in working metal with a lathe. Part 1 of 3. For more about the open source machine tools project, please go to 🤍
Being an engineer I have a knack for finding problems where they don’t exist, and coming up with over-designed solutions. Combine that with being a wanna-be toolmaker and things can get out of hand real fast. But in the case of this project I think I may have stumbled upon something actually useful! On a metal lathe there are a few tricks of the trade for setting the cutting tool heights. Like referencing a tailstock center, or the centerpoint of a faced piece of material. But these aren’t exactly precise methods. A common (and extremely simple) approach to this problem is to machine a reference bar whose length is the exact distance between the spindle centerline and the way surface. Then setting this on the ways near the cutting tool to set the height. While all of these work just fine as far as resulting in a good finish, I still see room for something a little more elegant. So in this video I’ll be putting together a lathe tool that I’m not sure exists. And maybe for good reason! #inheritancemachining #machineshop #hobbymachinist Patreon (Early Access + Ad Free + Drawings) - 🤍 Drawings Store - 🤍 Merch: 🤍 Instagram - 🤍 Website - 🤍 Amazon Storefront (affiliate links): 🤍 Thank you again to the Micrometer level Patreon members listed at the end of the video! Welcome back to the manual machine shop! In this video I’ll be making a popular everyday carry item, a low profile minimalist wallet. This will be a pretty simple wallet design including a money clip, but the machining process is anything easy. I’ll start this project like I do every project, at the drafting board, where I’ll put together a pencil drawing of the build to come. The wallet itself will be made of easy to machine 360 brass, and the clip of brushed 304 stainless steel. The body includes a fairly complicated engraved geometric pattern and to help with the engraving process I’ve created a fixture plate made of 5083 ATP (aluminum tooling plate). This project is very heavy on the vertical milling machine, but I do make one brief (and welcomed) visit to the metal lathe. #inheritancemachining #machineshop #hobbymachinist Patreon (Early Access + Ad Free + Drawings) - 🤍 Drawings Store - 🤍 Instagram - 🤍 Website - 🤍 Amazon Storefront (affiliate links): 🤍 And a special thanks to my "Micrometer" level patrons! Welcome back to the manual machine shop! In this video I’ll be prototyping a machinist jack with a few unique design features. The original idea comes from a very nice follower who shared his idea with me and I’m excited to share it with you as it solves a lot of the common problems with typical screw jacks. As always I spent a little time at the drafting board engineering the design (mostly) based around the tooling I had available in the shop. The final design is made from A2 tool steel and one of the key features that sets it apart are the knurled clamping collars that replace the standard jamb nut designs. Additionally there is a 2 stage threaded mechanism that uses a very coarse multi start thread for quick adjustment. Then ultra fine threads for high resolution allowing for precisely setting the jack height to within one ten-thousandth of an inch. Most of the work was done on the metal lathe as well as the vertical milling machine, but I used my previously made rotary table chuck adapter to maintain my references as I bounced back and forth between the machines. And it worked flawlessly. #inheritancemachining #machineshop #hobbymachinist Patreon (Early Access + Ad Free + Drawings) - 🤍 Drawings Store - 🤍 Instagram - 🤍 Website - 🤍 Amazon Storefront (affiliate links): 🤍 A special thanks to my "Micrometer" level patrons! This video is a job we did to make a Sawmill Drive Roller and it involves a lot of machining, broaching and welding in our machine shop. We start with a piece of hollow steel tube and need to rough turn the OD before boring the internal diameter. We turn down the ends to bring the tube to size before making up the centre drive plug. The centre drive plug needs to be machined and a centre hole drilled and bored to size. We are using our 150T hydraulic press for broaching and cutting 2 keyways in the plug before interference fitting it into the roller and dual shield welding in place. The roller is taken back to our customer who then uses their Mazak Integrex CNC to finish machine the outer diameter. They also use the CNC to groove and mill all the profiles into the outer diameter to finish the roller. Special thanks to Damien at Toomey Manufacturing for allowing us to get some footage of their Mazak Integrex CNC in action! 🤍 In this video we are using: - TM-26120G Centre Lathe - HMP-150T Hydraulic press - WIA 500i Weldmatic welder Join our channel: We upload new videos every Friday at 5pm AEST!
