KAMAZ Arctic 8x8 is an all-terrain truck designed to work in the Arctic and the Far North which can move in complete off-road conditions. The key feature of the KamAZ all-terrain vehicle has become an articulated frame, which is not typical for trucks. Such a machine turns not due to the rotation of the wheels, but with the help of a "breaking" frame. This decision was caused by the dimensions of the wheels: they are made very wide for this all-terrain vehicle, which simply does not give sufficient resources for a full turn. The articulated frame is horizontally movable and provides a minimum turning radius. A full-size spare wheel, a crane-manipulator unit and a utility block, where various tools and accessories are stored, as well as an additional supply of fuel, are located behind the Arctic's cabin. Under the cab is an in-line six-cylinder turbodiesel with a volume of 12 liters and a power of 450 hp. At the same time, the ecological class of the engine complies with Euro-5 standards and can be increased to the Euro-6 level. Kamaz Arctic 8x8 is equipped with a six-speed automatic gearbox from Allison. Truck received four driving axles. For the sake of all-terrain qualities, the maximum speed of KAMAZ was reduced to 55 km / h. Fuel tank capacity: 2 x 400 l The length of the car is 12 meters, and the total height is 4 meters. This height is the maximum allowed value for the dimensions of cars on public roads. High ground clearance - almost 70 cm, width 2.5 meters. With the help of special wide tires, excellent cross-country ability of the car is achieved in extreme climatic conditions and on soft soils. Their width is one meter, and the radius is 86 cm. These wheels made the all-terrain vehicle more stable and reduced the pressure on the ground, which, among other things, allows to do less harm to the nature of the Arctic. Naberezhnye Chelny was located in the center of the former Soviet Union. The navigable rivers – the Kama River and the Volga River – as well as proximity of the railway line, were central to meeting the logistical needs of the construction site for materials and equipment. Going forward, the location would also allow for the easy shipping of ready-made trucks to customers. The fact that the huge construction company "KamGESenergostroy" existed in the region allowed construction of plant buildings and apartment blocks for prospective KAMAZ employees to be completed. Workers and engineers, representing more than 70 ethnicities, converged on Naberezhnye Chelny to fuse into a "melting pot" of the construction project personnel. Orders placed by KAMAZ to procure construction materials and equipment were filled by all the ministries and departments, a total of over 2,000 enterprises. Over 100,000 personnel were employed at the construction site itself. The would-be truck plant was being provided with the most state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment by the contemporary standards. More than 700 international firms were among equipment vendors for KAMAZ facilities, including such globally known corporations as Swindell-Dressler, Holcroft, CE-Cast, Ingersoll Rand, Ex-Cello (U.S.A.), Hueller-Hille, Liebherr (West Germany), Morando, Fiat (Italy), Renault (France), Sandvik (Sweden), Komatsu and Hitachi (Japan).
