Net Present Value explained in a clear and simple way, in just a few minutes! Two steps: first understanding the idea of present value and future value, and then Net Present Value. Present Value and Future Value are closely related concepts. An example of Future Value is: How much money will I have one year from now if I invest $100 at an expected 20% annual return? $100 multiplied by 1.2 is $120. An example of Present Value is: How much money do I invest today to achieve $120 one year from now at an expected 20% annual return? $120 divided by 1.2 is $100. So to get to the future value, you move from left to right: take a present value, and multiply it by 1 plus the rate of return. How much money will I have two years from now if I invest $100 at an expected 20% annual return? $100 multiplied by 1.2 is $120. This $120 in turn multiplied by 1.2 is $144. How much money do I invest today to achieve $144 two years from now at an expected 20% annual return? $144 divided by 1.2 is $120. Then divide the $120 once again by 1.2 to get to $100 today. The formula for future value is $100 times 1.2 to the power 2, equals $144. In other words, present value times 1 plus the rate of return to the power of the number of years, equals future value. The formula for present value is $144 divided by 1.2 to the power 2, equals $100. In other words, future value divided by 1 plus the rate of rate of return (to the power of the number of years), equals present value. Let’s perform a Net Present Value calculation step-by-step. What is the present value (PV) of all the cash inflows and cash outflows of the following project? The project is expected to provide four years’ worth of benefits of nominally $400 per year, and an investment today of $1000 to launch the project. What is the present value of a $400 benefit that we expect one year from now? Take the nominal amount of $400 and divide it by 1 + the weighted average cost of capital. Weighted average cost of capital (or WACC) is a calculation of a firm's cost of capital in which each category of capital is proportionately weighted. We take a fairly high WACC of 20% in this calculation. 1 + 20% equals 1.2. $400 divided by 1.2 equals $333. The present value of a nominal amount of $400 one year from now is $333 as today’s equivalent. What is the present value of a $400 benefit that we expect two years from now? To calculate that present value, we need to take the nominal amount of $400 and divide it by 1 + 20%, to the power 2 (as we need to take two steps: from year 2 to year 1, from year 1 to today). This is the same as saying $400 divided by 1.2 * 1.2, or $400 divided by 1.44, which is $278. Next we calculate the present value of the $400 benefit that we expect three years from now, and the present value of the $400 benefit that we expect four years from now. We have now translated all cash flows into today’s equivalent. To get to #NPV, you now simply sum the amounts: $333 + $278 + $231 + $193 minus $1000 investment today. The Net Present Value is $35. The word “Net” in the term #NetPresentValue means deducting the investment amount from the present values of the future cash flows. As the net present value of this project is positive, it is worth pursuing. Accept the project proposal, as it creates value for the company. If the net present value of the project would have been negative, it would not be worth pursuing. Reject the project proposal, as it does not create value for the company. The main idea of Net Present Value (NPV) is very simple: time is money! The net present value method takes the time value of money into account, by translating all future cash flows into today’s money, and then adding up today’s investment and the present values of all future cash flows. There're a lot of false facts about animals and we're getting to the bottom of the common misconceptions in this video. I've googled popular animals myths to debunk them for you. Can blue whales swallow a car? What do you think is the largest thing a blue whale can swallow? We're talking about the biggest animal in the word to have ever lived on our planet. It can grow to up to 100 feet. So it's possible to imagine a blue whale swallowing something big like a car. But can it really? It's because, when they have a chance to drink, they will swallow 50 gallons of water at one sitting; - It's a myth that anteaters vacuum ants using their noses. Anteaters have very long tongues; - Another misconception states that owls can spin their heads, neither more nor less than 360 degrees. Their head-spinning does have its limit - 270 degrees in one direction; - If you touch a butterfly's wings, the animal won't lose its ability to fly. It will survive - despite the common myth that says the opposite. Butterfly's wings have scales; - Wolves don't howl at the Moon. They typically howl at night, true, but because that's the period of time when they're most active; - Giraffes sleep about 4 and a half hours daily. It's not that unusual for animal species that are most active during daylight; - Many people believe moles are blind. These small, burrowing mammals actually CAN see. It's just their vision is really poor and only adapted to recognize the light; - Chipmunks, bats, turtles, snakes - they all hibernate during the winter, which saves them energy for other seasons when they get more active and are capable of getting more food; - Earwigs prefer to spend their time in dark, moist places such as under tree bark or in soil. Suppose we let our life satisfaction depend on things challenging to obtain. In that case, we set ourselves up for stress, discontent, and insecurity. Make a small indent in the center of it with your thumb when it's on a grill or a pan. - Want to whip cream but have no blender? You can simply shake the cream in a mason jar. But, hey, don't forget to put the lid on! - Keep a knife under really hot water for a minute, then dry it with a paper towel if you want to make a clean cut through any sticky dessert like a cheesecake. - If you've overcooked chicken and it's too dry, cut up the pieces, add some mayo, some spices, and your favorite veggies. - When you cook pancakes, you should watch for the bubbles to appear on them. - Crying again while chopping an onion? No more of that! Just cut off the root before you slice it. - When you cook something with chili peppers, coat your hands with any vegetable oil to protect the skin. - To make perfect sunny-side-up eggs, crack them in a preheated pan coated with oil, then add a bit of warm water, and close the lid for 45 seconds. - To whip egg whites faster and better, make sure they’re cold and add just a bit of salt to them before you start the whipping process. - Before putting a steak on the skillet, dry it off with a paper towel, ensuring it will caramelize, not steam. - Cook whole butternut squash in the microwave for up to 3 minutes. After that, peeling it should be easy. The biggest spider people know about is the South American Goliath birdeater. This puppy-sized arachnid usually has a foot-long leg span. Its body is the size of a large fist, and its weight is more than 6 ounces. When the creature's moving, it makes bizarre, eerie sounds. They're the clicking of the spider's feet. They have hardened tips that hit the ground like a horse's hooves - just not as loud. This spider is one of the most dangerous creatures in the world. It protects itself by sending out clouds of hairs that have microscopic barbs on them. If they got in your eyes and nose, they'd be super painful and itchy. These hairs would also stay there for hours or even days. That sounds extremely unsettling. But imagine what our planet would look like if spiders were the size of jeeps! What is owned is on the left, what is owed is on the right. The #balancesheet is one of three very useful #financialstatements that a company puts together and publishes. The other two financial statements are the income statement, an overview of the profit or income that the company generates during a period, and the cash flow statement, an overview of how much cash the company generates, and where it spends that cash during a period. The balance sheet is a statement of the financial position at a point in time, so it’s like a picture. The income statement and cash flow statement both cover the flow during a certain period (usually a month, a quarter, or a year), so they are like a movie, each with its own focus. Current assets and non-current assets on the left. Current liabilities, non-current liabilities, and equity on the right. Current assets are cash and other assets that are expected to be converted to cash within a year. Non-current assets are longer-term investments that cannot be converted into cash quickly. Current liabilities are amounts due to be paid to creditors within twelve months. Non-current liabilities are amounts owed that are to be paid after the period of one year. Equity on the balance sheet is the book value of the shareholder capital. That’s how the balance sheet works on a conceptual level. Let’s now look into the balance sheet of a real-world company: retail company Walmart. Walmart’s fiscal year runs from February through January, so we’ll be reviewing the year-end balance sheet of January 31st, 2020. Current assets $61.8 billion, non-current assets $174.7 billion, adding up to total assets of $236.5 billion. Current liabilities $77.8 billion, non-current liabilities $77.1 billion, equity $81.6 billion. And as the word balance sheet suggests, the total amount owned equals the total amount owed. Per the accounting equation: assets equal liabilities plus equity. Let’s zoom into the balance sheet in more detail, and review what is in each of the balance sheet categories: current assets, non-current assets, current liabilities, non-current liabilities, and equity. Same five categories, just a lot more detail to dig into. In the American format of the balance sheet, assets are listed from most liquid to least liquid. Liabilities are listed from due first to due last. I will take you through the main line items. The balance sheet: an overview of what a company owns and what a company owes at a point in time, which can tell very interesting stories about the financial situation of a company. Sleep is super-duper important! It gives your body much-needed rest and recovery. It allows your brain to work at its fullest. But sometimes you feel sleepy right after you wake up and even for most of the day. Any ideas why this happens to you more often than not? No, it’s not because of a lack of sleep. It’s because you keep hitting that snooze button like it’s your job! When you’re awake, though, it’s busy multitasking with both restoration and daily activities. - You need to shake off the sleep and make your brain and body come in sync again. And what could tackle that job better than a cold shower? - Another way to wake up in a better state of mind is to turn on loud music. If you turn on your favorite tunes, your brain will start dancing to the beat, registering the new information, and waking up on the go. - A cold shock and sound stimulation are nice, but they work best if combined with one more method, and that’s exposure to morning sunlight. Again, it all comes down to hormones. - When the sun is shining into your face, that melatonin starts to dissipate and your brain gets pulled out of slumber naturally.
