!! Don't do the breathing exercises in a swimming pool, before going underwater, beneath the shower, or piloting any vehicle. Always practice sitting or lying down in a safe environment. Tinnitus symptoms may appear as a result of pushing too forcefully during the breathing exercise. If this happens, take a step back in your future practice, it’s important to increase gradually, not forcefully !! This Breathing Bubble is an audiovisual guide that helps you maintain rhythm and pace during your breathing sessions. Simply watch the bubble as it expands and contracts, and follow with your breath. You'll hear Wim breathe alongside you, and entrancing background sounds help tune out your surroundings, allowing you to focus on nothing but your breath. Bobette discusses the radical act of storytelling, by sharing both the destructive power of bearing the untold story, and the new storytelling tools now available to release long-buried stories, to generate healing and make movements that can transform our world. She calls us to cultivate storytelling, so that the living memory of tragic events cannot become buried or lost, and so that history cannot repeat itself. Bobette Buster is the Writer/Producer of the feature documentary, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, to be released 2019, with Karen Johnson and director, Midge Costin. She is also a Professor of the Practice of Digital Storytelling, Northeastern University (Boston), and the author of DO STORY: How to Tell Your Story So The World Listens (Do Book Co.UK, 2013; Chronicle Books (US)), now in its 9th printing (translated into five languages), and DO LISTEN: Understand What’s Really Being Said, Find A New Way Forwards, Do Book Co (UK) 2018; Chronicle Books (US). Bobette’s lectures on “Sound + Storytelling” and “Deconstructing Master Filmmakers” has put on the Visiting Faculty of Pixar Studios, Disney Animation, Catholic University of Milan, La Fémis (Paris) as well as many film and business programs worldwide. In addition, Bobette leads workshops on “How to Tell Your Story So the World Listens” to corporations in-house, including Google (Dublin, London), the BBC, and Animation Ireland. Bobette discovered her passion for storytelling while gathering the oral history of her Kentucky family’s and their neighbors’ Revolutionary War Land Grant farms heritage, a collection now housed in the Kentucky Museum Archives. She holds a BS Speech from Northwestern University (Evanston) and an MFA from the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producing Program. She worked as a creative story executive in Hollywood for Tony Scott, Ray Stark and Larry Gelbart, while also creating the first MFA course for Feature Film and Television Development at USC, where she was an Adj. Professor from 1992 - 2015. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

Wu-wei | The Art of Letting Things Happen

30.09.2021

Despite humanity’s technological developments and will to progress, we’re still utterly dependent on nature. Human effort has its limitations and is always in conjunction with nature. We cannot grow a plant, for example, completely isolated from natural growth, even though we can influence and manipulate it. The reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu, stated that the world governs itself. It doesn’t need our intervention. As Lao Tzu wrote: “When you arrive at non-action, nothing will be left undone.” End quote. This idea resembles the basic understanding of the paradoxical concept “wu-wei.” But when we look for a definition of wu-wei, we quickly discover that there isn’t one fixed meaning. Some translate wu-wei as “non-action,” or “doing nothing,” others as “actionless action,” and others as “effortless action.” We find out that Taoism offers several layers, if you will, regarding how wu-wei can enhance our relationship with the world. And how this ancient art of “letting things happen” doesn’t necessarily make us passive, ignorant bystanders but can actually improve how we act, leading to better outcomes. This video (Wu-wei | The Art of Letting Things Happen) serves as a humble attempt to make the depth of this philosophical idea clear and practical. How about finding your car keys in the fridge or the dog’s food in your cereal bowl? Sounds like you could use a brain boost. There're some really great ways you can train the old thinker! Did you know, for example, that automated actions stall your brain since it’s not taking an active part in what you’re doing? Or that solving math problems doesn’t even rack your brain as much as learning an unfamiliar tongue? And if you have a sweet tooth, this one’s for you: chocolate contains an important amino acid that helps your brain process things faster and with more efficiency! #UoPeople #OnlineLearning #Education Other videos you might like: 9 Brain Exercises to Strengthen Your Mind 🤍 4 Exercises to Test How Fast Your Brain Is 🤍 A Japanese Technique to Overcome Laziness 🤍 TIMESTAMPS: Draw 0:20 Change up your routine 0:41 Get a degree 1:19 👈 Use the opposite hand 2:19 Write 2:50 Learn a new language 3:24 Play chess 3:45 Play video games 4:11 🎮 Do the chores 4:36 Pick your nose 4:59 Walk 5:27 Eat chocolate 5:57 🍫 Breathe 6:31 Sleep 7:10 Music: 🤍 SUMMARY: - Drawing makes your right brain hemisphere work like a hundred horses, triggering creativity and helping you find unconventional solutions to problems at hand. - Automated actions stall your brain since it’s not taking an active part in what you’re doing. To avoid this lack of memory and train your brain at the same time, change up your routine every day. - You can get a degree that fits your schedule, and avoid student-debt at University of the People, the first non-profit, US-accredited, online university, where you can get a tuition-free Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the most in-demand fields like: business administration, education, health, computer science. - If you’re a righty, take a spoon or your toothbrush into your left hand and do the usual stuff. Lefties, you’re now righties for the day! - Typing on a keyboard or smartphone is okay too, but actual writing with a pen on paper activates critical-thinking and increases your analytical skills. - When you learn a language, you take on a whole new system, and your brain has no other choice but to adapt to the circumstances. - Chess is one of the oldest strategic games in the world, and it’s stood the test of time because it’s awesome, as simple as that. If you play it regularly, you’ll learn to concentrate and think bigger, taking actions that will affect your life a few steps ahead. - One 2015 study found that action video games in particular improve reaction time, observation skills, and decision-making. - House work also contributes to your brain power. It boils down to physical activity (which is great for the noggin, but more on that later!). It’s also effective at taking your mind off the bigger problems too. - Walking increases your blood flow, which means more blood (and oxygen that hitchhikes along with it) reaches your brain. This boosts the thinking organ’s activity, making it more flexible when it comes to important stuff. - If you have a sweet tooth, this one’s for you: chocolate contains an important amino acid, lysin, that helps your brain process things faster and with more efficiency. It’s only about dark chocolate, though, because lysin is found in cocoa beans. - Here’s a simple exercise that will fill your brain with oxygen and let you feel a rush of energy. Exhale all the air from your lungs and hold your breath for as long as you can. When you can’t hold it any longer, breathe in powerfully and repeat. The influx of air into your lungs will send oxygen to the tissues, and your blood will start pumping faster. - Just don’t forget to check out the link to today’s video sponsor down in the description box. Life-saving Reason Pilots Dim Lights at Take-Off and Landing

Do you wonder why flight attendants always give us the same instructions before take-off and landing? Some of them sound strange and seem to have no logic. Like, why do we need to open window shades or sit in darkness for flights at night? Pilots have their own window to look through, and they can’t even see if it’s dark or not in the passenger cabin. What gives? Take-off and landing are the most dangerous moments of the whole flight. Airplanes seldom crash in the air; the pilots can easily control the aircraft at a high altitude, or even in a turbulence zone. Most crashes actually occur when the plane is rising above the airport, or is touching back down on the runway. So all the instructions we follow have a good explanation. And that’s for our own security. Let’s see how it works. Other videos you might like: Why Planes Don't Fly Over the Pacific Ocean 🤍 Pilots Reveal 16 Nuances That Make Your Flight Safe 🤍 11 Secrets Flight Attendants Will Never Tell You 🤍 TIMESTAMPS: The source of power on board 1:04 Emergency 1:38 Why pirates used to wear an eye patch 😜 4:02 Why does the seat back have to be straight? 4:44 Why you should keep window shades open 5:25 What about cell phones? 6:28 #planes #rulesofflying #brightside SUMMARY: - The source of power on board the plane is an electric generator, which works at full blast during these 2 crucial moments of the flight. - The lights are turned off so that nothing interferes with the generator’s work when it’s under the most stress. - The human eye is built in a special way. When the light around us rapidly changes from very bright to dark, it takes some time for us to get used to it. - The crew dims the light in the cabin on a nighttime flight so that the passengers’ eyes get used to the outside darkness. - Your eyes won’t need time to adjust to see the little floor lights that guide you to the exits. That’s why using your gadgets with a bright screen is also not allowed. - If everyone had gotten used to low light conditions before the accident happened, you'd see about 1,000 times better, compared to if you were suddenly plunged into the darkness. - Passengers should stay in their seats with seat belts fastened, the back of their seats in a vertical position, and tray tables locked. - In case of an emergency, this position is also safer for you and the passenger behind you, since the risk of trauma to the head and neck is much lower this way. - Pilots say that passengers are curious; they're perfect for an extra set of eyes to see if something goes wrong out there. Usually passengers report stuff right away. - Plastic shades can also cause different injuries: in the case of a crash landing, the plastic can break into sharp pieces, which can cut your face, hands or other body parts. - The root of this instruction is in the past, when the navigational system wasn’t protected well enough from interference. - Most researches show that switched on electronic devices don’t influence modern navigation. So, in 2014, this rule was officially called off. - Some airlines still stick to it, though, mainly out of habit. It’s just a question of time before it’s no longer used anywhere. Watch more videos in our new App: 🤍 Normally, our lifetime is too short to see any major changes. We don’t notice mountains rise, the way rivers change their course, or how oceans are created. Entire valleys may be sinking, but it usually takes too long for them to sink entirely. Still, a group of scientists recently noticed there’s a new ocean being formed really fast and we can even witness it appear. Not far away from the Horn of Africa peninsula, the sixth ocean is being born at the moment! By the way, there's a theory that claims the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans might just cease to exist, forming the new ocean basin. Eurasia will be split to form a new ocean, and all the continents will migrate to merge into the supercontinent. Another possible scenario claims the continents might merge into the uniform landmass, or form a circle with a large sea inside, and the Super Pacific Ocean outside. And since all the continents keep drifting northwards even now, it’s quite probable that almost all of them will meet up somewhere at the North Pole. So, here's how the Earth might change in millions of years. #brightside TIMESTAMPS: A new ocean 0:50 World’s longest-lasting lava lake 3:34 We’ll get more volcanoes! 4:06 The Pangea supercontinent might come back together 6:44 Music by Epidemic Sound 🤍 Subscribe to Bright Side : 🤍 Our Social Media: Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: 🤍 Stock materials (photos, footages and other): 🤍 🤍 🤍 For more videos and articles visit: 🤍

And, according to some, the cheaper your pleasures, the richer you'll be. Net Present Value (NPV) explained

399889
6256
396
00:05:26
29.07.2019

Net Present Value explained in a clear and simple way, in just a few minutes! Two steps: first understanding the idea of present value and future value, and then Net Present Value. Present Value and Future Value are closely related concepts. An example of Future Value is: How much money will I have one year from now if I invest $100 at an expected 20% annual return? $100 multiplied by 1.2 is $120. An example of Present Value is: How much money do I invest today to achieve $120 one year from now at an expected 20% annual return? $120 divided by 1.2 is $100. So to get to the future value, you move from left to right: take a present value, and multiply it by 1 plus the rate of return. To get to the present value, you go from right to left: take a future value, and divide it by 1 plus the rate of return. ⏱️TIMESTAMPS⏱️ 0:00 Introduction 0:15 Present value and future value 1:49 Future value formula 2:07 Present value formula 2:24 Net Present Value calculation 4:12 NPV outcome 4:39 Evaluating NPV You can do this for multiple years as well. How much money will I have two years from now if I invest $100 at an expected 20% annual return? $100 multiplied by 1.2 is $120. This $120 in turn multiplied by 1.2 is $144. How much money do I invest today to achieve $144 two years from now at an expected 20% annual return? $144 divided by 1.2 is $120. Then divide the $120 once again by 1.2 to get to $100 today. The formula for future value is $100 times 1.2 to the power 2, equals $144. In other words, present value times 1 plus the rate of return to the power of the number of years, equals future value. The formula for present value is $144 divided by 1.2 to the power 2, equals $100. In other words, future value divided by 1 plus the rate of rate of return (to the power of the number of years), equals present value. Let’s perform a Net Present Value calculation step-by-step. What is the present value (PV) of all the cash inflows and cash outflows of the following project? The project is expected to provide four years’ worth of benefits of nominally $400 per year, and an investment today of $1000 to launch the project. What is the present value of a $400 benefit that we expect one year from now? Take the nominal amount of $400 and divide it by 1 + the weighted average cost of capital. Weighted average cost of capital (or WACC) is a calculation of a firm's cost of capital in which each category of capital is proportionately weighted. We take a fairly high WACC of 20% in this calculation. 1 + 20% equals 1.2. $400 divided by 1.2 equals $333. The present value of a nominal amount of $400 one year from now is $333 as today’s equivalent. What is the present value of a $400 benefit that we expect two years from now? To calculate that present value, we need to take the nominal amount of $400 and divide it by 1 + 20%, to the power 2 (as we need to take two steps: from year 2 to year 1, from year 1 to today). This is the same as saying $400 divided by 1.2 * 1.2, or $400 divided by 1.44, which is $278. Next we calculate the present value of the $400 benefit that we expect three years from now, and the present value of the $400 benefit that we expect four years from now. We have now translated all cash flows into today’s equivalent. To get to #NPV, you now simply sum the amounts: $333 + $278 + $231 + $193 minus $1000 investment today. The Net Present Value is $35. The word “Net” in the term #NetPresentValue means deducting the investment amount from the present values of the future cash flows. As the net present value of this project is positive, it is worth pursuing. Accept the project proposal, as it creates value for the company. If the net present value of the project would have been negative, it would not be worth pursuing. Reject the project proposal, as it does not create value for the company. The main idea of Net Present Value (NPV) is very simple: time is money! The net present value method takes the time value of money into account, by translating all future cash flows into today’s money, and then adding up today’s investment and the present values of all future cash flows.
